Tie dye is a technique whereby textiles are patterned by tying firm knots in the material or by tying parts together before dyeing. The fabric, which is soaked in water, possibly mixed with soda, is then dipped into the dye bath. The patterns are created because the paint cannot adhere to the knotted or tied parts.
By bunching the clothing from one point and then dipping it into different dye baths, more colourful circular patterns can be created.
Tie-dye clothing was widely worn in a subculture such as the hippy movement.
